Introduction to PILATES

Pilates is a movement science that improves strength, posture, balance and coordination without adding increased muscle mass.  It  makes the body longer and taller by strengthening the core musculature using neuromuscular resistance.  Pilates movements are performed in a precise manner under direction of a skilled instructor who evaluates your ability and prescribes the appropriate regimen.  The efficiency and intensity of the movements produce rapid results for the participant!

Pilates is a very adaptable series of movements that can be modified to fit all ability levels.  The instructors at FFAC are all Physical Therapists trained in orthopedics and spinal care.  They are able to make appropriate program accommodations for weaknesses.  Pilates participants often report their problems with long standing spinal pain are reduced or abolished with regular performance.  Pregnant women and those  undergoing treatment for acute orthopedic injuries should not participate in Pilates.

A quote from Joseph Pilates answers the question well:  "You will feel better in 10 visits, look better in 20 visits, and have a new body in 30 visits."  The efficiency and specificity of movements produce changes in all areas of physical development.  It is the reason Pilates is the preferred method of conditioning for professional dancers, gymnastics, swimmers and performance artists.
