A
little over two years ago, I found myself on the losing end of a
bicycle race with my dogs.
I ended up with a badly shattered femur
and fractured pelvis (the dogs were just fine, thanks). During
the next fourteen months, I underwent three surgeries at two different
hospitals. One doctor's expectation was that amputation would
eventually be required, while another believed that while I could
retain my leg, I would always require a cane.
Six months ago I began physical therapy with Susan Fisher, at Fenton Physical Therapy. About twelve weeks into my therapy, I felt ready to increase my activity level. What exercise could I do that would help an old 50 - something body that wouldn't jeopardize the progress I had made since beginning therapy? Pilates became the answer. I knew very little about this wonderful form of exercise, but after some investigation and a discussion with Susan (my Physical Therapist) I signed up for my first six week session. Classes are taught by Physical Therapists, and limited in size to allow for individual attention - both big selling features in my decision. All kinds of people are realizing benefits of Pilates, and that's reflected in our classes - I'm not the oldest, and we aren't all women either! Last week I saw the surgeon who said I would always need a cane and walk with a limp. He was impressed enough with my progress (I'd been without a cane for a week) that he said he was going to look into Pilates, hoping to recommend it for other orthopedic patients. This week marks the beginning of my 3rd six-week session. Looking back, I'm amazed and very pleased with how much progress I've made, and not just in a physical sense. I didn't realize how much my self-confidence had slipped until I started to regain it! Pilates is designed to strengthen our core - abdomen, back, buttocks - and it's doing that, but it's also helped strengthen my other core (you know - that part deep inside that only you and God know about). Thanks Susan, Thanks Fenton Physical Therapy, and thanks Joseph Pilates. Cindy Ellis
